Pond Plants

At Hertfordshire Fisheries we have built an excellent reputation for the quality and variety of our pond plants. During the pond season we have a massive range of plants for you to choose from and knowledgeable staff to advise you on the perfect planting scheme for your pond or feature.

Pond plants are extremely decorative and help give the pond a natural look but they also perform three vital functions.

Water plants are vital to remove mineral salts (from fish waste etc), which will minimise green water algae and Blanketweed, provide oxygen and shade to the pond.

Water Lilies and Deep Water Plants

These plants grow in the deeper areas of the pond and prefer to be in areas away from strong water flow such as waterfalls and fountains. The sumptuous flowers of these plants bring beauty to the pond and the floating leaves provide shade and cover for fish and other aquatic life as well as helping to reduce algae.

Marginal Plants

Marginals provide life and colour around the pond margins with tall plants such as irises and reeds forming striking clumps and attracting dragonflies and other wildlife

through to rafting plants with delicate flowers providing shade and a habitat for baby fish and tadpoles.

Oxygenating Plants

Oxygenators generally grow from the bottom of the pond with their leaves giving off bubbles of oxygen helping the ecology of the pond and are efficient at removing mineral salts from the water.

Floating Plants

As well as their decorative value floating plants are excellent for providing shade for fish and other aquatic life and their fine roots are used by spawning fish and provide a habitat for aquatic insects.

Bog or Moisture Loving Plants

These plants must not be submersed in water but planted in moist areas around the pond they are highly decorative.
